On Thursday celebrity hair stylist, makeup artist, co-founder of The GlamApp and Rachel Zoe’s BFF Joey Maalouf visited Penrose Academy to share with our Cosmetology and Esthetics students his journey in the professional beauty industry during our weekly Assembly. Joey comes from a small town outside of Detroit, Michigan where he got is start at a young age doing makeup applications in a salon across the street from his highschool, in this salon he quickly realized that he needed to be able to do hair as well. After a few years in the professional beauty industry Joey made a move to New York City where he stated that he just started taking chances leading him to landing a job doing makeup at Henri Bendels. Through his job at Henri Bendels Joey was able to make connections with agencies in New York giving him the ability to shadow celebrity makeup artist Paul Starr. After working with Paul Starr Joey was referred by Paul to a then up and coming celebrity stylist named Rachel Zoe. Rachel quickly took Joey under her wing and taught him to always be himself, convinced him to move to Los Angeles and eventually Joey would star alongside Rachel on her famed T.V. show “The Rachel Zoe Project”.
Today Joey is still Rachel’s BFF, but has recently launched a company of his own alongside actress-blogger Cara Santana. Joey told our students the story of the night he received the call from an eager Santana who proclaimed to him “I’m a Genius, we need to start an uber for beauty” and with this phone conversation The GlamApp was born. The GlamApp is essentially a beauty on demand app that allows you to call on a professional makeup artist, hair stylist or manicurist in your own home for less that $100. The GlamApp is now available in 16 major US cities and in London. At the launch of The GlamApp in Scottsdale, Arizona Joey met Penrose Academy Alumni Hailey Roberts with whom he quickly made a connection with and offered her a position with his company. Hailey now coordinates events and travels with The GlamApp team as their events assistant.
In addition to sharing his journey with our students Joey also did a fall makeup tutorial. During this tutorial Joey talked about the importance of preparing the skin for a makeup application and shared some of his go to products and tools. Joey expressed the importance of streamlining your kit so you don’t have to travel with too many products and also touched on contouring, eye shadow smudger crayons, and gave some tricks on how to get the perfect vampy lip for fall.
Joey left our students with a few key points, take chances, be yourself and share your beautiful energy and charisma with the world.
