Penrose Academy welcomed Los Angeles based session stylist Lauryn Tullio to share her hair story with our Cosmetology students. Lauryn studied hairdressing at the Vidal Sassoon Academy in Los Angeles and from the moment she was in school she quickly learned she needed to be asking herself two questions consistently. What do I want to gain from this industry? and What do I want to give back to this industry? Lauryn knew from the moment she started asking herself these questions that she didn’t want to just be behind the chair and she didn’t just want to work as a session stylist. Lauryn now works in Los Angeles as a Session Stylist out of collective space and works behind the chair two days out of the week in a West Hollywood Salon. Most recently Lauryn worked with Garrett Borns, better known by his stage name BØRNS on his newest music video for “Electric Love”.
Lauryn spoke to our Cosmetology students about starting their own hair journey, continuing education, areas of media to draw inspiration from, how to negotiate session work, the difference between freelance work and being represented by an agency, packing your kit, set etiquette, and demonstrated different styling techniques she uses when working with today’s top music artists, producers, fashion designers, models and photographers.
Her biggest piece of advice for everyone in the professional beauty industry “everything that you do directly affects me and what I do has a direct effect on you. We are all responsible for the state of our industry.”
